4 men and 1 woman accused of crimes related to COVID-19

SINGAPORE – Four men and a woman were charged with COVID-19 related crimes on Wednesday (April 29), including one who was accused of using abusive words during a discussion of facial masks.

The five are Abdul Halim Adi, 48, Rajalakshmi Sukomaran, 36, Sethu Selvaraj, 43, Karthigayen Balasubramaniam, 32, and Muhammad Faez Salimi, 26.

They are all Singaporean.

Abdul is accused of verbally abusing a social distance ambassador by yelling vulgarities near the Hougang shopping center on April 14 at approximately 1:15 p.m.

The next mention of Halim’s case was arranged for May 13 and he intends to plead guilty.

Rajalakshmi was charged with one count of leaving her residence at Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 on April 19 at approximately 6 p.m. for a purpose that is not allowed under COVID-19 2020 Regulations (Temporary Measures) (Control Order).

Rajalakshmi said he intends to plead guilty. He will return to court on May 6.

Sethu was similarly charged with one count of leaving his residence on Petir Road on April 19, at approximately 5 p.m., for a purpose not permitted under COVID-19 2020 Regulations (Temporary Measures) (Control Order ).

She also faces two unrelated charges of abuse and unfair restriction against a 37-year-old woman on June 6 of last year. He is said to have pulled the woman’s hand and refused to let her go at approximately 8:30 p.m., near another HDB block along Petir Road. Her charge sheet says he hugged her from behind and groped her on a ladder that landed between the first and second floors as he laced his hands around her waist.

Sethu will return to court on May 21.

Karthigayen was slapped with two counts of throwing abusive words at two people on April 12 between 8:30 a.m. and 8:41 a.m. in basement 1 of Our Tampines Hub.

Apparently not represented in court, Karthigayen denied having scolded anyone, claiming there was only one discussion about the facial masks.

He told the court that he intended to hire an attorney, but that he had difficulty doing so due to the circuit breaker measures. The next mention of his case was deferred until June 9.

Faez is accused of breaking into a minimart located in Bukit Batok to steal cigarettes and surgical masks.

He allegedly broke into the Meema store, at block 315 Bukit Batok Street 32, on Monday at 6.30 in the morning raising the shutter towards the main entrance and entering the store. He then allegedly stole 15 cardboard boxes and 200 cigarette boxes worth $ 3,950. He also stole $ 300 in coins and more than $ 60 in surgical masks, according to his charge sheet.

The total cost of your stolen loot is $ 4,310. He has been sent for investigation and will return to court on May 6.
