SINGAPORE – An 81-year-old woman came to the rescue of her neighbors and helped them put out a fire in her Housing Board apartment on August 9, even though she was afraid of the flames.

For her bravery, Madam Lim Ee Chin received the Community First Responder Award on August 27, the SCDF said in a Facebook post on Thursday (September 10).

The award is given to members of the public who have stepped forward to provide assistance to others in distress or to save property or both.

“Despite his age, he did not hesitate to help put out the fire. His selfless act has helped mitigate the damage and injuries caused by the fire,” SCDF said.

The fire that Madam Lim helped extinguish had broken out in a residential unit at the corner of Block 917 Jurong West Street 91 at 11:20 p.m. on August 9.

The fire involved the contents of the living room, the SCDF said.

In a video accompanying the Facebook post, Madam Lim spoke of how two of her neighbors passed buckets of water from her apartment to put out the fire, until the flames were under control.

All of this took place before SCDF staff arrived on the scene.

In the aftermath of the fire, three people were taken to Singapore General Hospital.

SCDF praised Madam Lim for her selflessness, noting that many may have instinctively fled rather than lending assistance as she did.

“Madam Lim’s action exemplified bravery and, in her own words, the kampung spirit,” added SCDF.

Madam Lim said in the video that she was happy to receive the award and even showed it to her neighbors, who made fun of her for “showing off.”
