8 Positions I Recommend at Tiong Bahru Hawker Center as a Neighborhood Resident, Lifestyle News

While Tiong Bahru is known to be a go-to place for hipster coffee lovers, it is also known to be a treasure trove of local dishes. And most of them are conveniently located at Tiong Bahru Hawker Center.

Being a self-proclaimed foodie, when I moved to Tiong Bahru about four years ago, the first thing on my agenda was exploring the food scene here. And I soon realized that I had a lot of options at the Tiong Bahru Hawker Center.

So after numerous makan sessions, this is what I have found to be worth the money and calories in case you are here with limited stomach space.

178 Lor Mee

There are two stalls at the Hawker Center that sell for me and both are very popular. My preference is 178 Lor Mee and the main reason is because you can get for me served with shark nuggets.

Yes, you did not read it wrong. You can get shark nuggets here and it’s not something you find anywhere. 178 Lor Mee is probably the only place in Singapore that sells shark nuggets for meYou may have made a brilliant marketing move.

Shark nuggets are quite similar to fried fish, but with a firmer texture and a good meat-to-batter ratio – each nugget is perfectly crispy. If you’re not feeling adventurous, you can always order a staple from for me, which is pretty good too.

The lines here can be long, I’ve waited half an hour before so get off early to avoid the lunch crowd. They are open from 7 a.m. M. At 2:30 p. M., But they sell out pretty early, and I’ve seen them close at 12:30 p.m. M.

Grandma’s pancake

For traditional, nostalgic min jiang kueh which is done the old fashioned way, check out Granny’s Pancake. It is true that it is not exclusive to Tiong Bahru and there are outlets at Hong Lim Hawker Center and Ghim Moh Food Center.

However, the owner of each Granny’s Pancake stand prepares their own menu, so while the taste and texture of the pancakes are uniform, the fillings each stand offers are different. The store here uses less sugar since the owner is diabetic.

My favorite order here is the Peanut Pancake which features crunchy peanut and nutty inside a fluffy, slightly fluffy pancake. It is best eaten when it is nice and hot, so after it is fresh is the best time to eat a piece.

Hong Heng Fried Sotong Prawn Mee

Personally, I am a huge fan of Hokkien mee and have tried most of the big name ones in Singapore. Fortunately for me, possibly one of the best Hong Heng Fried Sotong Prawn Mee is located nearby at Tiong Bahru Hawker Center.

The position made it to the local Michelin Bib Gourmand list in 2016 and 2017, and it is well deserved. No matter when he comes around, Hokkien’s mee has remained consistently good. When I am undecided about what to eat, I usually end up eating here.

The key to a solid Hokkien mee dish is in the broth, and the one used in Hong Heng is rich and packed with umami. This goes perfectly with noodles that are slippery and have a lot of wok hey.

Hot Plate Western Food

If you had to choose between old-school street food western and cafe food, you’d definitely choose the former in no time. For one thing, the serving sizes are usually significantly larger, and two, it’s a lot more wallet-friendly.

Hot Plate Western Food, as the name suggests, serves your food on a hot plate, keeping food warm for longer. As a bonus, it also makes the food more Instaworthy.

I recommend getting the chicken cutlet here. Several places serve tough and lightly cooked chicken cutlets, but the ones here are tender and juicy. The portion size is also very generous; sometimes I have trouble finishing my food.

Jian Bo Chee Kueh

Jian Bo Chee Kueh is one of the most popular cheesecake posts, and for good reason.

The rice cakes here are freshly steamed before your eyes and topped with lots of chili and crispy canned radish or chye poh. the cheesecake It is true that it is quite sinful and greasy, so you may want to share it with a friend to feel less guilty afterwards.

Joo Chiat Beef King

For a hearty and comforting bowl of beef noodles, I recommend patronizing Joo Chiat Beef King. There are dry options and soups, and I prefer to have the former here.

White rice flat noodles are drenched in a rich, slimy sauce, and as someone who hates overcooked jerky, I’m happy to say that the ones here are tender and juicy. Order a bowl of beef soup on the side to accompany your noodles.

Skirt and dirt

Most of the stalls at the Tiong Bahru Hawer Center have been in operation for a long time. But not Skirt and Dirt – it only opened in August and is run by a group of young street vendors.

They specialize in affordable gourmet-style burgers and have kept the prices affordable. The burgers are certainly smaller, but you get fresh ingredients and unique fillings.

I especially like their Cheese Skirt Beef Burger, which features a juicy beef burger and a huge disc-shaped cheese skirt that is crisp and highly addictive. There are also seasonal menu items, giving you all the more reasons to visit again.

Tiong Bahru Hainanese boneless chicken rice

In a complex as large as Tiong Bahru Hawker Center, there are sure to be several chicken rice stands. And out of the many, this is my favorite.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B9dcXGWJxtX/

Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken has been on the Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore list for several years and generates constant long lines, especially during meals.

The chicken here is juicy and well seasoned, while the rice is fragrant, fluffy, and not too greasy. They also sell other dishes that are good to share and my top recommendation is their fried tofu with Thai chili sauce.
