SINGAPORE – The Weekend Warriors can now expect to have more entrants, five to eight, in team sports like basketball and soccer when Singapore moves to reopening phase three on Monday (December 28).
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Edwin Tong, Minister of Culture, Community and Youth, wrote: “In line with Phase 3 reopening, the group size limit for sports activities will increase to eight starting next Monday.
“This means that team sports such as basketball, football, hockey and volleyball can now resume in a 4v4 format. Larger facilities may have more than one zone. There is not enough time for one 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2 formation (for soccer) still, but this gives sports fans some additional options. “
Dragon boaters can also go on the water in a group of eight, while fitness enthusiasts can participate in study classes comprising groups of eight as long as they meet the revised safe management requirements, the minister said.
He added: “Sport is vital to our physical and mental well-being and as an enjoyable recreational activity. We want to make sure that more Singaporeans can play and enjoy sport safely.”
Tutor Jeremy Ong, 34, welcomed the news and hopes to get a kick out of it on New Year’s Day.
He said: “While we understand that the Multi-Ministerial Task Force must have its reasons for generating the numbers it did to slow the spread of the coronavirus, five did not make sense when it comes to street football.
“Four against four is much more competitive and I think it is the right decision, as it seems that we have the situation of the virus under control for now, and this will encourage people to exercise more, within safe measures, of course.” .
The national governing body Sport Singapore also issued a notice on Thursday for the resumption of sport, physical exercise and activity for phase three.
Apart from changes in group sizes for sports and team activities, the maximum number of people allowed in all sports and recreational facilities will be limited according to their gross area based on eight square meters per person, less than 10 square meters per person. or 50 people, whichever is less.
Requests can be made to admit more than 50 people at Sport Singapore for large venues that can be arranged in separate facilities.
Individuals must maintain a distance of two meters while exercising, while groups sharing a space must not interact and must be separated by three meters. Masks should be worn by default and can be removed while doing strenuous exercise.
Sport in Singapore was officially halted when facilities closed and safety restrictions were imposed during circuit breaker (April 7 to June 1) and phase one (June 2 to 18), before reopening in phase two from June 19.
