SINGAPORE – A man in a wheelchair took advantage of and abused a domestic worker who was taking care of him.

Heng Thiam Soon, 69, was sentenced to two weeks in jail on Friday (September 11) after pleading guilty to one count of outraging the modesty of the Myanmar citizen.

The 25-year-old cannot be named due to a gag order to protect her identity.

Two other similar charges were taken into consideration during the sentencing of Chief District Judge Ong Hian Sun.

The court heard on Friday that the maid began working at Heng’s residence in April last year. It was not said if she still works there.

She was hired by Heng’s wife to care for him, as he had limited mobility due to a stroke in 2018.

Sometime between May and July 2019, Heng told the maid to retrieve an item near him.

Then he touched her buttocks when she did.

In response, she pulled his hand away and told him she couldn’t touch it.

The incident was finally reported to the police in July 2019, Deputy Prosecutor Ng Jun Chong said.

Urging the court to imprison Heng for three weeks, the DPP noted that the maid had approached Heng to retrieve the item, as she trusted him.

“He exploited this by sexually abusing her,” added DPP Ng.

In mitigation, Heng’s attorney, Wilbur Lua, asked the court to impose a fine on his client.

Mr. Lua also said that Heng is currently in a nursing home and is under constant supervision.

“There is little rehabilitative sense in incarcerating him,” the lawyer added.

For outraging the modesty of a domestic worker, Heng could have been jailed for up to four years and / or fined. He cannot be spanked as he is over 50 years old.
