SINGAPORE – A drunk passenger on a public bus became enraged and attacked the driver who had told him to stop hitting the handrails.
Seng Oh Kwang beat Mr. Thavamani Krishnan 11 times aboard SBS bus service 186 between 11:50 pm and 11:55 pm on August 16 last year.
The 69-year-old Singaporean was sentenced Monday (October 5) to six weeks in jail after pleading guilty to one count of assault and public drunkenness.
On the day of the incident, Seng met some friends for a drinking session at an Upper Cross Street coffee shop around 7 p.m., and drank more than six bottles of beer.
Deputy Prosecutor Kor Zhen Hong said Seng was “very intoxicated” when he left the restaurant before 11pm.
Boarded the double-decker bus around 11:15 p.m. M. And about 25 minutes later, Thavamani, 70, heard banging noises while driving the bus down Farrer Road.
The driver stopped the bus, conducted an inspection and saw that Seng was using his hands to hit the handrails.
Seng wasn’t happy when the driver told him to stop his actions.
The DPP said: “Subsequently, from around 11:42 pm to around 11:55 pm, the defendant periodically confronted the victim and, on numerous occasions, grabbed the victim’s shirt and struck the victim in the face.”
Police were alerted and Thavamani closed the bus doors while waiting for officers to arrive.
Closed-circuit television video of the attack showed Seng repeatedly grabbing the driver’s shirt and hitting his head multiple times.
Thavamani was unable to continue driving the bus that night due to the attack and some passengers remained on the upper deck to avoid Seng.
Later, Mr. Thavamani was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he was found with injuries, including bleeding from a blood vessel over the white of his right eye.
He was discharged the next day and given a medical leave for three days.
Seng’s bail was set at $ 5,000 on Monday and he will be handed over in state court on October 14 to begin his prison sentence.
For assault, he could have been jailed for up to two years and fined up to $ 5,000.
