SINGAPORE: Six people were rescued and about 100 residents of the Waterwoods condominium were evacuated after a fire “completely engulfed” a room, the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) said on Saturday (December 19).

SCDF was alerted to a fire in Block 19 Punggol Field Walk around 11.25 a.m. Saturday. The fire involved the contents of a bedroom in a two-story unit on the 16th floor, the force said in a Facebook post.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced their way into the smoke-filled unit and extinguished the fire with a jet of water.

One person was found in the kitchen while two people were rescued from a bedroom on the top floor of the unit, directly above the burning bedroom.

Three other people were rescued from the ledge outside the bathroom on the top floor.

“They were rushed to safety through the toilet window,” SCDF said.

Five of the six residents were taken to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation, while one person refused to go to the hospital, SCDF added.

“Patients who suffered smoke inhalation or severe burns but are in stable condition will be transferred to the Specialized Burn Center at Singapore General Hospital instead of the nearest hospital,” SCDF said.

About 100 residents of the affected block were evacuated by security agents as a precaution. The cause of the fire is under investigation, the force said.
