6 ‘party buses’ seized, LTA investigates illegal modifications and other crimes

SINGAPORE: Six “party buses” have been seized in the past two months during various operations against “irresponsible service providers,” the Land Transportation Authority (LTA) said on Thursday (September 10).

LTA said it received feedback that some party buses began offering service in nightlife areas such as Boat Quay and Clarke Quay when Phase 2 of Singapore’s reopening began.

“Party buses are often heavily modified and typically cater for groups of partygoers,” LTA said in a Facebook post.

“In addition to potentially thwarting Singapore’s efforts to limit the transmission of COVID-19 during this crucial period, some modifications also threaten passenger safety.”

Some of the vehicles have modified seats without adequate safety restraints, LTA said, adding that passengers could “lunge forward during sudden braking.”

In addition to the “illegal modifications”, LTA officers also found other crimes such as driving without a valid vocational bus driver’s license, insurance coverage, and road tax.

“Investigations into these crimes are ongoing,” said the authority.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to be responsible and continue to adhere to safe management measures.”

Under Phase 2 of Singapore’s reopening after the COVID-19 “circuit breaker”, most businesses have resumed operations, but some entertainment venues such as nightclubs and karaoke venues are unable to reopen.
