Last week, a woman took a nap in the living room and never woke up again.
When her husband tried to wake her about 10 hours later, the 48-year-old woman’s body had already grown stiff and cold.
He immediately asked his son to call an ambulance. Paramedics soon arrived at her rental apartment in Hougang and pronounced the woman dead.
The grieving family later learned that he had suffered a heart attack.
Her sudden death was a blow to her son who said, “I can’t accept it. She was fine, how could she have died?”
Speaking to Lianhe Wanbao, the woman’s husband said he was diagnosed with schizophrenia more than a decade ago.
She missed an appointment at the Institute of Mental Health on August 27 and stayed home because she was not feeling well.
Little did he expect her to be gone forever the next day.
A family in distress
The family of three lived in a two-bedroom rental apartment and was unemployed, a volunteer who was helping with funeral arrangements told the Chinese Evening newspaper.
“It was a heartbreaking sight … Almost no family or friends showed up for the three-day wake,” they said.
The woman’s husband, who used to work as a cleaner, shared that he lost his job during the circuit breaker.
He described his wife as a caring person who was worried about her future, adding that she had sought help for her family who were living in a desperate situation. They had managed with some financial help from the government.
However, the man hopes to be self-sufficient and says, “I hope I can get a job in a warehouse or work as a delivery boy so that we can support our son.”
The couple’s only son suffers from anxiety due to bullying for a long time due to his mother’s unusual appearance, according to the newspaper. He is currently receiving treatment for his condition.
“I used to avoid going out with my mother in public because people were staring at me. If I could reverse time, I would raise my head and stick it out,” the grieving son said to Wanbao.
After learning of the family’s plight, the funeral home absorbed the costs of the services. Other people also extended a helping hand to both father and son.
