SINGAPORE: A total of 43 Temasek Junior College (TJC) staff members became ill with symptoms of gastroenteritis after consuming food prepared by Chilli Api Catering on March 12, the school said on Monday (March 15).

Eight of them are currently hospitalized and in stable condition, said director Low Ay Nar.

The provider was ordered to suspend operations starting Sunday after 82 people, including 43 from TJC, became ill with symptoms of gastroenteritis.

It is unclear where the remaining 39 people ate the food.

TJC had ordered 216 Chilli Api bento boxes on Friday “to thank the staff individually for the work in the first quarter,” Ms. Low said.

The staff members collected the lunch boxes and consumed them separately.

Some staff members who had eaten the bento boxes reported gastroenteritis symptoms the next day.

“Upon receiving these reports, the school immediately advised all staff who had consumed the same lunch boxes and who were experiencing similar symptoms to see a doctor,” Ms. Low said.

“We are closely monitoring the health of all affected personnel and will provide the necessary support,” added the director.

The school is also working with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) to assist in investigations.
