SINGAPORE – Singapore confirmed 40 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday afternoon (September 1), bringing the country’s total number of infections to 56,852.
The Ministry of Health (MINSA) said there was one community case, one work pass holder and seven imported cases. The imported cases had been placed on notice of admission upon arrival in Singapore.
More details will be announced Tuesday night.
On Monday, a total of 90 nursing home employees and residents were tested for Covid-19 after a former worker who returned to the Philippines became infected.
All of the results that were sampled at Lee Ah Mooi Nursing Home on Silat Avenue were negative, the Health Ministry said Monday night.
The ministry said it had been informed that a care worker who previously worked at home had tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday in the Philippines.
His last day at the nursing home was last Wednesday and he had not shown any symptoms of an acute respiratory infection while at work.
As a precautionary measure, the Ministry of Health and the Integrated Care Agency (AIC) worked with Lee Ah Mooi Home to screen 90 staff members and residents who were identified as possible contacts in the case.
All physical visits to the nursing home have also been suspended until further notice, the AIC said.
The room and affected areas have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and the use of personal protective equipment by staff will also be improved.
This was not the first infection in the Lee Ah Mooi nursing home. On March 31, the first case of coronavirus was confirmed at its Thomson Lane branch. Subsequently, a total of 16 employees and residents were infected.
41 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Singapore on Monday. They included three community cases, comprising one work pass holder and two work permit holders, the Health Ministry said.
There were also seven imported cases on Monday, including two Singaporeans, four permanent residents and a work permit holder.
The six Singaporeans and PR had returned to Singapore from India between August 17-19, and from Malaysia on August 17. The remaining case is currently employed in Singapore and arrived from India on August 19.
The average number of new daily cases in the community in a week has increased from two cases two weeks ago to three in the last week.
The number of unrelated cases in the community in a week has remained stable at an average of one case per day during the same period.
With 72 cases discharged on Monday, 55,643 patients have made a full recovery from the disease.
A total of 78 patients remain hospitalized, while 1,049 recover in community facilities. None are in intensive care.
Singapore has had 27 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died from other causes.
Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December last year, has infected more than 25.6 million people. More than 854,200 people have died.
