SINGAPORE – A woman who poured hot water on her boyfriend’s groin, thinking he was cheating on her, was sentenced Thursday (November 26) to four years in jail.

Zareena Begum PAM Basheer Ahamed, 50, was found guilty by District Judge Brenda Tan of willfully causing serious harm after a trial that ended on September 28.

The man was hospitalized for 26 days and was unable to work for about six months as a result of the incident, which occurred while he was sleeping.

He suffered second and third degree burns to more than 12 percent of his body.

In presentations at the end of the trial, Deputy Prosecutor Ng Jun Chong said the two became a couple in 2006, but over the course of their relationship they separated several times while accusing each other of cheating.

On January 12, 2017, Zareena spotted her boyfriend at the HarbourFront Center ferry terminal with a woman, someone Zareena suspected had been having an affair with her boyfriend since 2015.

In the early morning of July 5 of that year, Zareena pulled her boyfriend’s mobile phone out of her bag while he was sleeping in their living room.

The DPP said she was furious when she saw the other woman’s messages to her boyfriend.

“She wanted to teach him a lesson for letting her down over and over again. She wanted to teach him a lesson that he would never forget,” DPP Ng said.

Zareena boiled water before pouring a cup into her boyfriend’s pants, over his groin.

The man shot up in extreme pain and asked Zareena why she was doing this to him, to which she replied “I serve you well.”

Zareena, who was represented by defense attorneys SS Dhillon and Suppiah Krishnamurthi, argued that the entire incident was an accident.

She claimed that she woke up her boyfriend and asked him to check his phone, but this led to an argument.

When she went to the kitchen, where she had been boiling water to drink, he followed her.

Zareena claimed in court that, while holding a cup of hot water, the man pulled on her left arm, causing the contents to spill onto her groin.

Dr. Chew Khong Yik, who treated the victim, stated that the burns suggested that he was lying down when hot water was poured on him.

He described sudden splash injuries to his upper torso and none to his knees, calves, feet and toes, which would have been expected if he were sitting upright.

On Thursday, Dhillon told the court that Zareena intends to appeal against her conviction and sentence. His bail has been set at $ 30,000.

An offender convicted of willfully causing serious harm with a heated substance can be jailed for life or imprisoned for up to 15 years with a fine or beating. Zareena cannot be spanked because she is a woman.
