KUALA LUMPUR – A Malaysian woman who wanted to lose weight to look good at her wedding ended up losing her life when she underwent liposuction at a salon that was not licensed to perform the procedure.
Malaysian police detained the owners of the beauty salon in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, and are investigating the matter after the death of 23-year-old Coco Siew Zhi Shing (Xiao Zhixin) on Saturday (October 17).
Ms. Siew had been preparing for her wedding and wanted to look her best at the once-in-a-lifetime event, her brother Xiao Mingan told Sin Chew Daily.
She had found the salon online while searching the internet for liposuction-related treatments and signed up for a 2,500 ringgit (Singapore $ 820) procedure with them to remove the fat from her arms, Xiao said.
On Saturday afternoon, Ms. Siew visited the classroom for the first time, accompanied by a friend. He received an injection for anesthesia upon arrival, local media reported.

But about half an hour after the injection, he started to feel bad. And about an hour later, his heart reportedly stopped.
She was rushed to the hospital, but efforts to resuscitate her failed and her death was certified around 5 in the afternoon.
Xiao said that her family was especially distressed that they did not arrive at the hospital in time to see her sister before she died.
The salon owner was not present during the procedure and did not appear at the hospital until 8 pm, he said.
“After our repeated questioning, the person in charge of the salon finally revealed that they were not licensed to perform such medical procedures, but were only licensed for normal beauty treatments,” Xiao told Sin Chew Daily.

The two owners of the beauty salon, a woman and her daughter, were detained for assisting in investigations into Ms Siew’s death, The Star newspaper reported.
“We are still determining the cause of death,” Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Comm Saiful told a news conference at Sentul Police Headquarters on Monday.
Liposuction packages at the salon were advertised for between RM1,500 and RM3,800, and the procedure had been performed for at least 10 clients, according to local media reports.
Xiao said that her sister led a fit and healthy lifestyle and cared a lot about her appearance. She had placed first in an Asian modeling competition in 2014, he added.
“I hope my sister’s experience serves as a warning to many young women,” Xiao said.
