SINGAPORE – Twenty-one diners have been fined $ 300 each for disobeying Covid-19 measures at food and beverage outlets, such as not wearing a mask immediately after eating or drinking, mingling between tables, and sitting in groups of more than five diners.

These violations were noted at Resorts World Sentosa, Boat Quay and Clarke Quay restaurants, the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment (MSE) said in a statement on Tuesday (October 6).

In addition, two F&B establishments were ordered to close for 10 days, while 13 establishments were fined for violating Covid-19 measures.

The two stores ordered to close are Tong Xin Ru Yi Traditional Hotpot and Invincible Noodle House. Both restaurants are on Boat Quay.

At the hotpot restaurant, nine customers were seen mingling at two tables in a private room on Saturday around 9.15 p.m., the ministry said.

On the same day at Invincible Noodle House, several customers were found consuming alcohol at 11:40 p.m.

The sale and consumption of liquor is not allowed in food and beverage points of sale after 10.30 pm according to the Covid-19 Law (Temporary measures).

The Urban Redevelopment Authority issued an order for both restaurants, requiring operators to close the facilities for a period of 10 days, from October 3-12.

The 13 fined food and drink establishments were taken seriously by seating more than five groups from different households together, allowing groups to mingle between tables, seating groups less than 1 meter apart and not guaranteeing that food handlers wear masks correctly.

One store was fined $ 2,000 for repeat offenses, while the remaining twelve were fined $ 1,000.

MSE reiterated that masks should be worn at all times, unless eating or drinking or engaging in strenuous activities, regardless of the facility.

However, an informal survey of 130 people by The Sunday Times found that, while most people were aware of the masking policy, they seemed to take mixed approaches when dining out.

43% of respondents indicated that they removed their mask just before starting to eat or drink, 26% said they would only do so after a drink arrived, while 17% said they would remain masked until the bottle was served. food. Only 12 percent said they would remove their mask as soon as they sat down at a table.

Behavior after meals was equally varied.

43% of respondents said they put on the mask immediately after finishing the meal, even if their dining companions were still eating, while 34% put on the mask only if they were preparing to leave the table, such as to go to dinner. the bathroom.

But 16 percent said they masked only after everyone at the table had finished eating and drinking, and 5 percent said they put on the masks once the table was clear.

Last Tuesday, the ministry announced that execution measures were taken against 32 diners and 22 food and drink establishments, of which eight were ordered to close.

The Government said it will continue with compliance controls at food and beverage outlets to ensure that they remain safe spaces for everyone.

“Agencies will not hesitate to take compliance measures against both clients and facilities that do not comply with safe management measures.”
