About 200 people were evacuated after a fire broke out at the Orchard Hotel on Thursday afternoon (September 17).

The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire around 3 p.m.

Stomper Stuart alerted Stomp to the incident and shared images of smoke coming from the hotel at 442 Orchard Road.

“A huge column of smelly smoke was seen coming out of the vents,” he said.

“SCDF’s response was extremely prompt and comprehensive.

“Congratulations on your incredible response time and good work.”

In response to a Stomp inquiry, SCDF said the fire involved an exhaust duct from the kitchen on the second floor of the building.

“The fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system and two fire extinguishers used by the public prior to the arrival of SCDF,” said an SCDF spokesman.

“About 200 people were evacuated from the affected facilities.”

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Jean-Philippe Jacopin, general manager of Orchard Hotel Singapore, said in a statement to Stomp: “A small fire broke out in the kitchen of The Orchard Cafe on Thursday afternoon (September 17).

“This activated the smoke detector and the sprinkler system in the kitchen.

“The fire died quickly.

“The guests were not required to be evacuated and no one was injured.

“The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) is investigating the cause of the fire.”
