She was only 12 years old when her stepfather sexually abused her for the first time, and the 41-year-old assaulted the girl multiple times in 2017 and 2018.
He took advantage of her while they were home alone together or when the rest of the family slept, becoming more intrusive with each act as he progressed from abuse to hand-held sexual penetration.
The abuse ended only when he was arrested, after the girl told a school counselor.
CHARGES
The man was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in jail and 24 strokes of the baton after he pleaded guilty to two counts of penetrative sexual assault.
Judge Dedar Singh Gill took into consideration three other charges of outraging the girl’s modesty and two other charges of sexual assault during sentencing.
The girl and the man cannot be identified due to a gag order to protect their identity.
Court documents state that the girl was found to have mild intellectual disability, dyslexia, and poor cognitive ability.
At the time of the events, the man lived in an apartment with the girl, her biological mother, her grandmother and her younger sister, as well as a domestic worker and a tenant.
He had married the girl’s mother in 2012.
The man began sexually assaulting his stepdaughter in July or August 2017.
He continued to abuse the girl for the next 15 months, committing the crimes in the master bedroom with the door closed.
This included sexually penetrating the girl with his hand in October 2017 and in November 2018, where he attempted to detain the man.
The girl did not trust her family, fearing that they would not believe her.
He also did not want to burden his mother, who had health problems.
But he finally told his school counselor, on November 2, 2018, that the man “was doing things to him” and a police report was filed. The man was arrested the same day.
The man’s jail sentence has been retroactive to November 3, 2018, when he was first dispatched.
For every crime of sexual assault involving penetration, the man could have been imprisoned for between eight and 20 years and punished with at least 12 strokes of the cane.
