April Fool’s Day took a decidedly little fun turn for a family and about 20 food delivery people last Thursday (April 1).

The delivery men had arrived at the Braddell Heights property with bags of food, only to find that no one at the address had placed the orders.

The commotion undoubtedly caused great anguish in its occupants.

A four-second clip believed to be of the incident was posted online, showing several delivery passengers on their phones as they waited in front of a row of townhouses.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, one of the owners said that delivery riders started arriving between 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM.

The 40-year-old housewife said she was away at the time, but her husband, as well as her son, mother-in-law and maid were home.

He had read about a series of food delivery harassment by loan sharks, but never thought he would end up being a victim, no less than on April Fools’ Day.

She added that her husband immediately rejected the orders and did not ask what the packages contained or how much they cost.

“After the passengers realized it was a joke order, they didn’t make things difficult for us and left,” the owner said. His mother-in-law added that some cyclists were visibly dismayed but “blamed their bad luck.”

Later in the afternoon, he received a call from a loan shark who told him that his Indonesian maid had borrowed a sum of money from them.

The owner confronted the domestic worker, who confessed that she had turned to loan sharks because one of her family members was ill and needed urgent treatment.

She had been with the family for more than five years and panicked when informed of the situation, the owner said. Subsequently, the family made a police report.

“She thought Singapore was very safe and that it was just a regular loan that can be paid off slowly,” said the owner, describing the maid as “hardworking.” The maid had also borrowed money from them once, but has since repaid the amount.

According to the Chinese daily, the police have confirmed that a report has been filed and are investigating the case.

The owner added that she will talk to her maid about the best way to solve the problem. At the same time, he rebuked loan sharks for using food deliveries as a harassment tactic, as “the work of the passengers is also very hard.”
