17 Suspects Linked to Stolen Budget 2020 Grocery Vouchers Arrested, Singapore News & Top Stories

SINGAPORE – Seventeen more people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the theft, misappropriation or disposal of Budget 2020 grocery vouchers.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the cases are likely unrelated and opportunistic in nature, police said late Friday night (October 16).

Eight men and six women between the ages of 16 and 67 were among those arrested for allegedly stealing the 2020 budget grocery vouchers from mailboxes in Junta de Vivienda blocks across the island.

These locations comprise residential blocks at Maude Road and Kitchener Road at Jalan Besar, Lengkok Bahru at Redhill, Lower Delta Road, Lorong 1 Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, Aljunied Crescent, Jalan Kayu, Kim Tian Place at Tiong Bahru, and Marsiling Road. .

Three teenagers, a 17-year-old man and two 16 and 18-year-old women, are among those arrested for the alleged theft of the vouchers and will be charged in court on Saturday.

A 28-year-old woman was also arrested for alleged involvement in helping to dispose of the stolen vouchers. Investigations are ongoing.

The last two suspects in Friday night’s statement are a 70-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, who are being investigated separately for dishonest misappropriation of vouchers in residential blocks in Choa Chu Kang.

The arrests are the most recent related to stolen grocery vouchers.

Earlier on Friday, Miqheul Wahyudean Abdullah, 24, was charged with three counts of robbery, while Irwani Nur Amira Azami, 23, was charged with two counts of robbery.

The couple were arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing Budget coupons from HDB mailboxes.

They had allegedly worked together sometime between 8 p.m. on October 6 and 3:30 a.m. on October 7 to open mailboxes in Block 872 Tampines Street 86.

They are charged with stealing 15 grocery vouchers valued at $ 10 each from the mailboxes of two victims.

Miqheul is said to have stolen vouchers at the same location on another occasion and was charged with an additional count of theft.

Police had also previously said that they had arrested five others, three men and two women, for their alleged involvement in the theft of grocery vouchers elsewhere in Singapore. Police investigations into these cases are ongoing.

Those guilty of theft can be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.

Members of the public who are eligible for Budget 2020 grocery vouchers are encouraged to collect them from their mailbox as soon as possible and to keep their mailbox safe at all times.

Those who suspect their coupons have been stolen should immediately file a police report and call the Grocery Voucher hotline at 1800-2222-888 to request that their coupons be voided and replaced. Voided vouchers cannot be redeemed.
