Singapore: Flores Alvin Jay Vargas, 36, a nurse, was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail after an incident involving an elderly man in a wheelchair in 2019.

Flores, who worked at All Saints Home in Jurong East, pleaded guilty to one count of willfully causing harm on Wednesday, December 23. He could have been fined up to $ 5,000, imprisoned for up to three years, or both, for the crime of causing serious harm.

The nurse, a Filipino national, not only assaulted a 67-year-old resident, but also asked a staff member to lie about what happened on May 25, 2019.

On the day of the incident, the old man, who had suffered brain trauma in an accident three years ago, asked for a knife because he wanted to cut an apple.

An All Saints Home staff member told the resident that he couldn’t have a knife, after which the old man threw a tantrum. He then began pressing the doorbell behind his bed multiple times, according to a report in The new role (TNP).

Mr. Vargas came and tried to explain to the older man why he couldn’t have a knife.

The older one, however, insisted on ringing the bell. And when the doorbell was deactivated, the senior continued to press the portable staff attendance bell.

The nurse then tried to remove the doorbell from the older man, who pulled and ripped the nurse’s shirt.

This caused Flores to lose his temper, he kicked the resident and punched him several times in the chest.

Two nursing home employees present during the altercation witnessed what Mr. Flores had done to the elder and told him to stop.

Two days after the assault, the elder told his brother about the assault, during a visit from his brother, who filed a complaint with the police that same day.

The victim’s brother also requested that the eldest be admitted Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for a week. A medical report showed that the victim was suspected of having rib fractures.

Vargas sent a text message to one of the employees who had witnessed the assault asking him to say that he did not hit the victim. The employee later told police that she had not seen the assault. It is unknown if the staff member has been subject to any disciplinary action.

The nurse lost her job the same day the elderly man was discharged from the hospital and returned to the nursing home.

The residence said in a statement on December 23 that he takes the health and safety of his neighbors very seriously, and that Mr. Vargas was suspended after the complaint was filed and that after an internal investigation he was fired.

Additional measures have also been put in place, including installing additional security cameras and conducting additional training for older patients, to ensure the safety of residents.
