What was supposed to be a fun hotel stay turned into a nightmare for a 10-year-old girl and her parents after the girl drank juice from a broken glass bottle served to her.

The incident occurred at the W Hotel, located in Sentosa Cove, on Friday (December 4).

Stomper Kong and Stomper Lily he had been on vacation with his two daughters. Stomper Wang, a friend, had invited the family of four to join him on this mini getaway.

The trio shared their frustrations with Stomp after the incident occurred on the hotel premises around 10:30 a.m.

“My oldest daughter, Angela, was drinking apple juice from a bottle and only realized there were glass shards at the bottom of the bottle when she finished drinking,” Kong said.

“My wife didn’t notice it at first as she was taking care of my youngest daughter. When Angela told her, she immediately informed the hotel staff,” Kong said.

“I was not at the hotel at the time, but was rushing back. The hotel’s operations director attended to my wife and daughter and asked if they would take the bottled drink out of the refrigerator themselves.

“Then he asked if I had thrown the bottle on the table beforehand. I was surprised because I should be tending to my daughter, not questioning her.”

Kong said he felt “there was no concern or empathy” for his daughter during this incident.

“I’m from China, so I can’t speak English properly, but I can still understand what’s going on,” Kong said.

“Many of the discussions with the hotel managers took place with my friend, as he is fluent in English and can help me translate.

“Throughout these discussions, we felt we were looked down upon and despised. It was not a pleasant feeling. Also, we didn’t want to be questioned. We just wanted to send our daughter to the hospital.”

Kong shared that after two hours of discussions with the hotel, they ended up taking Angela to Mount Alvernia Hospital.

According to the Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao, Angela’s mother, Lily, originally wanted doctors to use a gastroscope to inspect her daughter’s stomach. However, the doctors said it was not necessary because there was no internal bleeding.

“She seems to be fine for now and may be discharged soon. The doctor said we should watch her as there could be internal bleeding when glass shards are swallowed,” Lily told Zaobao.

“We’re glad he’s okay, but he’s still scared to drink from a glass. In fact, every time he thinks about the incident, he gets more scared.”

Lily also told Zaobao that the general manager of Hotel W called to send her well wishes and expressed his intention to pay the medical bills and visit Angela. However, Lily declined his offer to visit her daughter.

“Despite this sad experience, we still want to congratulate three members of the restaurant staff for being caring and kind to us,” said Lily.

“They were happy and positive and we just want to tell them to keep up the good work.”
