SINGAPORE: One person was pronounced dead on the eastbound track near the Kallang MRT station on Thursday night (February 25), disrupting train services on parts of the East-West line.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. between Lavender and Kallang stations on the line to Pasir Ris, SMRT said.
“As a result of this incident, train services were suspended between Bugis and Aljunied stations in both directions. Lavender and Kallang stations were closed,” the transport operator said in a Facebook post around 11 pm.
At approximately 10 minutes to midnight, 16 people from various agencies were seen on the train track.
A white screen had been placed near the end of the train.
Police officers could be heard telling others not to move the body and to wait for the K-9 dog unit to arrive.
SMRT previously said that a body had been found on the runway, but updated their post later to say that one person was pronounced dead on the runway.
“The SMRT care team is on the ground to assist our staff and the families of the deceased when they are identified,” he added.
The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) said it received a call for assistance around 9.35pm at 5 Sims Avenue, adding that one person was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.
CNA saw a train stopped on the track near the Kallang MRT station, with people walking along the side with flashlights.
Several police cars, an ambulance and SCDF fire trucks were also seen outside the station.
The Kallang station was closed, while the police were seen outside the Lavender station.
One witness said he was on a train leaving the Lavender MRT station when “almost immediately it stopped and began to slowly reverse.”
“After about five minutes, the passengers were told to get off because there was some obstacle on the runway,” he told CNA. “Everyone got out and when they announced that another train was stuck in Kallang, everyone started to leave the station.”
SMRT first tweeted an alert around 10pm, saying there was no train service between Bugis and Aljunied due to “an incident,” adding that there are free regular bus and bridge services between the two stations.
In his Facebook update, he said that announcements were made at the train and station to advise travelers to seek alternative travel options.
“The SCDF and the police were immediately activated. We are assisting the police with their investigations,” SMRT said.
In a Facebook post, Labor MP Melvin Yong said that the National Union of Transport Workers has reached out to affected rail workers and will ensure they receive “the necessary mental and emotional support.”
