He succeeded Patriarch Pavle, who came after the German Patriarch.
A rare photo showing the last three Serbian patriarchs is circulating on social media these days, and was also shared by Goran Vesić, the deputy mayor of Belgrade.
Patriarch Herman was one of the oldest patriarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church, he was on the throne from 1958 to 1990.
He is also the only Serbian patriarch to retire during his lifetime.
He was succeeded by the beloved Patriarch Pavle, who held that position from 1990 to 2009, when he passed away in the Lord.
In his place came Irinej, until then Bishop of Nis. Irinej was ordained a monk by the then Serbian Patriarch Herman, who ordained him to the rank of Hierodeacon and Hieromonk, on October 24 and 27, 1959.
Pavle was also Irinej’s professor at the Prizren seminary.
