The sequel to “Spider-Man: Far From Home” has been delayed for a month, until December 17, 2021.
Spidey’s movie was originally scheduled for November 5, 2021, but Sony announced the move Thursday night after a shake-up of the Disney movie list was revealed earlier in the day. The sequel to “Far From Home” will take the place previously occupied by “Avatar 2”, which was delayed by one year until December 16, 2022.
The third movie in the Tom Holland franchise “Spider-Man” was originally supposed to be released on July 16, 2021, but Sony had previously postponed it for November 5, 2021, in April of this year.
Sony Pictures noted that the latest delay was only part of the national release schedule, casting doubt on its international release.
The move comes as most theaters around the world are still closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and there appear to be no plans to safely reopen them to a wide audience any time soon. Most big-budget summer movies, like Christopher Telan’s “Tenet” and Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” vacated their original release dates. In the case of “Tenet”, after several delays, it is no longer on the Warner Bros. release schedule.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie “Black Widow” was rescheduled for November 6, 2020, and the rest of the MCU entries were changed due to the widespread closure of film production. “The Eternals” is scheduled for February 12, 2021, “” Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings “is May 7, 2021,” Thor: Love and Thunder “is February 11, 2022, and “Doctor Strange” in the Madness Multiverse “is March 25, 2022.
The sequel to Sony Pictures Animation’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is slated for October 7, 2022, after it was delayed six months earlier this year.
