Sega tries to explain exactly what Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis really is

It requires a lot of explanation!

Yesterday, Sega announced Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. It was both confusing and exciting. Exciting since it looks like a modern version of PSO2, which was launched in 2012, but confusing since Sega didn’t really explain in advance what it really is and provided details such as “how much, if anything, will it carry over PSO2“As it turns out, not much.

According to a full breakdown on the Sega site, NGS (which is what they are calling for short) will release “After Episode 6” instead of a new one PSO2 episode. They are calling NGS “the renewal the game deserves”, and will function as a separate entity, but “coexistent” with the original game. Many elements of the previous game will not carry over, nor will “character growth” (read: levels, experience, skills, arts, and techniques). So … almost everything outside of AC and SG (coins) and weapons, units and Mags (the last trio will be “changed according to NGS‘ game system”).

This is really fine for me. Not all online games are World of warcraft, and the new coat of paint will be a great way to introduce people to the world of PSO. As long as the original still exists and is free, everyone can experience it too – win-win. Although Xbox Series X was revealed as a flagship platform in the announcement, Windows 10 (PC) and Xbox One are also confirmed, as is the free monetization tactic.
