Sara Bareilles To Headline Tina Fey’s ‘Girls5eva’ Comedy Series For Peacock – Deadline

Sara Bareilles will lead the cast of Tina Fey and Robert Carlock Girls5eva original series for NBCU’s Peacock. Casting of Bareilles was announced today during Peacock’s CTAM virtual press tour.

Written by Meredith Scardino, in Girls5eva, when a girl group with one hit wonder from the 90s is sampled by a young rapper, their members reunite to give their pop star dreams another shot. They may be grown women balancing couples, children, jobs, debt, aging parents, and shoulder pain, but can they not also be Girls5eva?

Bareilles will star as Dawn, a former member of the 90s girls’ short family group Girls5eva, who is now a bit quiet in life managing her small Italian restaurant in her family in Queens. When the opportunity arises, Dawn gets the band back together for a reunion of Girls5eva and may be just exactly what she needed.

“It’s a bottleneck for me to get creative paths with women like Meredith Scardino and Tina Fey, who I’m a fan of forever,” Bareilles said. “I’m a long time fan of so many of the characters they’ve killed in other projects, and I’m already in love with the women at the Girls5eva Center. I am so excited to help bring back to life what I know will be a clever, creative, hilarious show with a lot of heart. ”

Executive Scardino produces with Fey through her Little Stranger banner, Fey’s close associate Carlock through his Bevel Gears, Jeff Richmond, 3 Arts’ David Miner and Little Guranger’s Eric Gurian. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

Bareilles first garnered mainstream critical acclaim in 2007 with her hit ‘Love Song’, which reached no. 1 reached 22 countries around the world, from her debut album Little Voice. Since then, she has taken home a Grammy Award, received seven Grammy nominations, two Tony nominations and three Emmy nominations. She composed the music and lyrics for Broadway’s Waiter, and made her Broadway acting debut in 2017 by starring in the show’s lead role. She recently served as executive producer with JJ Abrams and Jessie Nelson for Small voice, a 10-episode musical drama series for Apple, for which they made the original music.
