This post originally appeared on July 14 and was updated on July 16. Update below.
Samsung is preparing its second round of headphones for 2020 and it seems that the Korean company has chosen to completely redesign its popular Galaxy Buds line.
The recently leaked images, which match other leaked designs, show that the Korean company has chosen a bean-like shape for the new headphones, abandoning the more traditional headphone shape we’re used to.
Update 7/16: There is now more information on the OnePlus Buds (mentioned below) that suggests they are going to challenge the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus in terms of battery life.
Talking with TechRadarOnePlus’ Jay Liu revealed that the new headphones will make use of the company’s Warp Charge technology, which will give the headphones 10 hours of battery life with 10 minutes of charge.
No special cables are required and priority will be given to battery status, as reported by TechRadar. “OnePlus Buds owners will be able to load quickly Liu says he uses any charger larger than 10w and will not require special cables. Despite the higher charging speeds, the OnePlus Buds will limit charging to 5v 1.5A to prevent damage to the 430mA lithium-ion battery inside the headphone case that offers more than 20 hours of additional battery life. “
In total, this will give the OnePlus Buds nearly 30 hours of playtime on a single charge, which breaks down into seven hours of use, with the case holding up to 23 hours of charge.
It will be interesting to see how OnePlus has managed to get so much battery into the OnePlus Buds without committing anywhere else. In a recent forum post Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, said that the new headphones will have a total weight of 45.2 grams (both the headphones and the case), while the AirPods have a total weight of 45 grams, despite having a time of lowest total listening (24 hours).
The source of the images, the reputed leaker Evan Blass, claims that they are called “Galaxy Buds Live”, which replaces the “Galaxy Buds X” trademark that I reported in April and the name “Beans” that was reported by Gizmodo United Kingdom (I was never entirely convinced that Samsung would call its next flagship device “beans,” but we’ll see.)
Based on the new image above, Samsung has completely reinvented its wireless headphone design by adopting an unusual bean-style shape. The biggest change seems to be the protrusion of the protruding ear tip you’ll find in most headphones that fits snugly in your inner ear. The Galaxy Buds + relied on a tight fit at the tip of the ear to provide passive noise cancellation, something they did well, and also to help them stay in place.
It will be interesting to see how these new headphones manage to remain secure in the ear, it could well be that the shape of the bean fits perfectly around the contours of the outer ear for a better fit. I suspect how well that works comes down to the actual size of the new shoots.
Tech site WinFuture created images based on leaked design specs in April, which closely resemble these new images. The site also claimed that the new Live Buds are “2.8 centimeters long”, which would mean a less round and more elongated design than the Galaxy Buds Plus.
The shape may be influenced by Samsung’s new minimized chipset technology, which is where the Korean company was able to “integrate up to ten discrete components into one,” as it describes it. This ultimately saves space and leaves room for a larger battery, or perhaps justifies a smaller device without massively compromising battery life.
Elsewhere, the key difference between Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds Live and Samsung’s current Galaxy Buds Plus will be active noise cancellation according to Gizmodo United Kingdom, which will pit them against Apple’s AirPods Pro (and also explains why Samsung will launch another pair so soon after the Galaxy Buds +).
They will also be IPX2 waterproof (meaning they can resist water falling at an angle of 15 ° or less) and a new, more robust charging case that closely resembles the case of the original Google Pixel Buds 2017.
New features also mean a new price: £ 179 depending Gizmodo United Kingdom. But, according to leaked information the site has seen, Samsung will offer a £ 30 trade-in for “any pair of old headphones.”
Samsung is no stranger to competitive discounts, in fact the Galaxy Buds Plus was included for free with the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but that price already dramatically undermines Apple’s $ 249 AirPods Pro. The promotion puts a bit more distance between rival products while undermining Google’s new Pixel Buds, which have no active noise cancellation.
Fresh competition
It seems that Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds will be launched amid strong competition from Google’s Pixel Buds, which will receive its first feature update in August and has just gone on sale in more territories, and OnePlus, who surprised with the news. from your own headphones yesterday.
The Chinese company announced on Monday that it will join people like Apple, Google and Samsung to launch its own pair of true wireless headphones on July 21, two weeks before Samsung’s unpacked event. No further details were shared about the new headphones, other than that they will be released alongside the much-hyped OnePlus Nord phone, OnePlus’s new budget phone.
But that detail is significant, because with Samsung and Google launching new headsets, and Apple planning big AirPods price cuts later this year, OnePlus is sure to make some kind of deal between the new phone and the headsets, especially considering that You’ve done this before with earphones and earphones.
If you’re looking for truly wireless headphones, save your money and watch a mini price war unfold between four big tech companies unveiling new products and discounts in the next three months.
