SINGAPORE – Samsung on Monday said it will announce its next smartphone on January 14, where it is expected to launch the latest versions of its Galaxy flagship phones.
Invitations from the world’s largest smartphone maker say the show will air next Thursday at 10am ET (11pm SIN / HK time) on Samsung’s website.
The launch is set to take place the same week as the digital-only CES 2021 – the biggest tech show of the year, where big companies mostly show off their new products.
South Korean electronics giant Samsung usually launches its Galaxy flagship devices in February, near or during the Mobile World Congress trade show.
Samsung has not revealed much of its own in the January 14 event. However, media reports from previous leaks suggest that there could be three phone announcements: the Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra, which are likely to make the company’s S20 devices a success.
Last year, the South Korean company said its third-quarter revenue was partly boosted by sales of smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 20. But Samsung predicted that there would be fierce competition in the smartphone and consumer electronics space in the final quarter of the year, which analysts said was likely due to Apple’s iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.
Samsung’s president and head of the mobile communications business, T.M. Roh said in a blog post in December that Samsung would expand its portfolio of foldable smartphones in 2021 to make its devices “more accessible to everyone”. Those devices are Samsung’s end with the Galaxy Z Flip with a family of 4 smartphone products priced at around 1,400.
Roh also teased “pro-grade camera and video capabilities” in Samsung’s new smartphone and hinted that some of the features available in Galaxy Note devices could be added to other handsets.
Shares of Samsung Electronics rose nearly 3% in South Korea on Monday.
