The Mi 10 Ultra is similar to Xiaomi’s new attempt to chase after the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, with a moving-sounding 120x zoom camera.
RODENT950 revealed the details of this camera, such as a marketing image, on Twitter. The phone’s lens has a maximum zoom of 120X, with 4x optical zoom, although we do not know the resolution.
The number of megapixels that Xioami decides to use is important, because with a relatively low optical zoom the Chinese manufacturer will achieve this maximum three-digit zoom by protecting and inflating the image. Without a large sensor, the 120x zoom would be blurred as each shot became dark and blurry.
hmm 120X zoom but only 4.xX optical zoom 🙄.Aka similar crop zoom like S20U pic.twitter.com/W691YHofTYAugust 8, 2020
The camera and name probably remind you of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which also uses a 48MP 4x optical zoom camera to achieve its 100x ‘Space Zoom’ feature. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra uses a different 12MP telephoto sensor, with a maximum of 50x zoom but 5x optical zoom. We tested the Note 20 Ultra even more deeply, but when we checked the S20 Ultra, we found that the zoom camera became significantly less effective because you got the magnification above 30x.
The current top of the flagship heap Xiaomi, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, is a great alternative to the normal flagship of Android, but one that is bad to find in the US. It is equipped with two camera cameras: a 12MP 2x optical zoom “portrait” sensor and an 8MP 10x hybrid zoom camera camera. This could mean we get two more zoom cameras on the Mi 10 Ultra, with the new 120x sensor likely to replace the 8MP camera and join the existing 108MP camera lens.
As for specs, expect a Snapdragon 865 chipset, or maybe the new Snapdragon 865 Plus if Xiaomi is ready to shell out for ultimate performance. This will then be combined with up to 16GB RAM and 256GB storage, based on benchmark results believed to be for this phone.
The Mi 10 Pro has a maximum 30W charging speed and a 6.6-inch curved AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. All of these are a step down from what Samsung is offering on its own Ultra handsets – a maximum charging wattage of 45W, and a 6.9-inch AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate. If Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra wants to make a real competitor, then these features should also be accepted, or offer their new phone at a significantly lower price.
We can see from the teaser image that there will be at least two color options – one is a nice shiny silver, and the other is black with rumors of the phone’s technology stenciled on it, like the wireless charging pad, NFC coil and parts of the camera array. It is certainly a unique look, and one fits in with a premium phone.
Xiaomi is holding an event on August 11 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its inception, as announced by its VP Lu Weibing on Weibo on August 3. This would make it the ideal time to unveil great new products, such as the Mi 10 Ultra. If and when this phone is officially unveiled, we will see if this phone really becomes the new smartphone zoom camera champion.
