“Speaking at a political convention is something I never thought I would do, but the future of our democracy is on the horizon,” said Yates, a longtime justice official who served in the Obama administration before remaining in office. an acting role in the transition to the Trump administration.

“Then I was fired for rejecting President Trump’s disgraceful and illegal Muslim travel ban,” Yates said, referring to the president’s decision to restrict travel to the U.S. from several majority Muslim countries.

“From the moment President Trump took office, he has used his position to make himself more advantageous than our country,” Yates said in her comments from Atlanta. “He has violated the rule of law, tried to arm our justice department, tried to attack his enemies and protect his friends.”

Yates briefly served as acting attorney general early in Trump’s office before the president dismissed her for refusing to defend his travel ban.

Trump first issued the travel ban in 2017, blocking the entry of those coming from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia – all mainly Muslim countries. Trump administration officials later added several non-Muslim-majority countries to the list because it faced a number of legal challenges, and the ban was imposed by the Supreme Court.
