Alex Smith was placed on Washington’s list of the physically disabled on Monday, which was the expected move even if Smith said he had been cleared for soccer activity.
If a player is not on the PUP list to start camp, he cannot continue elsewhere and the move gives the team time to make sure Smith can do whatever it takes to play the position before activating it. At a press conference Tuesday, head coach Ron Rivera said Smith will be a factor in the team’s quarterback competition in the event that happens.
“If that happens, I think this is a guy who becomes part of our equation. That’s the truth of the matter, “said Rivera, through Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.
Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen are the other Washington quarterbacks, and Rivera said “it will be pure competition” between the eligible applicants for the position. That competition won’t move to the practice field for a couple of weeks and we’ll see if Smith can join at that point.
