Why do some family members have COVID and others do not, even though they live in the same house? Explanation by Dr. Beatrice Mahler

There are cases of families of four or five members, in which two or three are infected with SARS-CoV-2, but although they live under the same roof and share the same space, the other members are not infected. It infects, for example, the wife and children, but not the husband. Or vice versa. The director of the Marius Nasta Institute of the Capital, Beatrice Mahler, confirms that there are cases of this type. When asked how to explain such a situation, Dr. Beatrice Mahler pointed out that there can be two different situations.

“On the one hand, we can have people who do not develop symptoms of the disease and then, at least according to the case definition, they are not tested and practically, we do not detect the positive case because it has not been tested. But there is also the possibility that these people have good immunity, a momentary immunity that will allow this infection not to occur in their body. There are studies in this regard, they are not published, but the problem of an efficient immune system arises, ”said Dr. Beatrice Mahler in an intervention at Digi24.

“But what we must remember is that the immune system is not a constant in our lives, it varies a lot depending on external factors, stress, how we eat, respect for sleep. Or, if these things change from week to week, and our body’s immune response to any disease, any infection changes. Therefore, we must not rely on natural immunity, but we must find solutions, and the vaccine is a solution, to stimulate immunity and help the formation of antibodies in the body specific to the diseases that we are at risk of encountering “, said Dr. Beatrice Mahler.

She says that the amount of particles reaching the body is very important and, like many other doctors, she says that we should not be afraid of drafts.

“In fact, where there is exposure to an environment where the amount of virus is very high, the risk of disease is much higher. Therefore, it is extremely important, when we are at work or in a room, that the windows are permanently open , that ventilation is adequate, because adequate ventilation reduces the risk of infection. Of course, hand washing and the use of masks must be added to this adequate ventilation. But that ‘current’, as we popularly know it, of window / open door and what we avoid, in this case, when we talk about airborne diseases, is an effective preventive solution ”, said Dr. Beatrice Mahler., director of the Institute of Pneumoftiziology” Marius Nasta “in Bucharest.
