Who can fire Doina Gradea from the leadership of TVR. The huge salary of the head of Public Television

In post-communist history, the editorial autonomy and independence of the public television service, as well as its objectivity and impartiality in the transmission of news, have often been questioned, with TVR being accused on innumerable occasions of government control and censorship.

Recently, a major scandal related to the leadership of TVR broke out due to the New Year’s Eve program, considered in bad taste and supporting the conspiracy theories that circulated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Law no. 41/1994 in connection with the organization and operation of the Romanian Broadcasting Company and the Romanian Television Company, SRTV operates under the control of Parliament.

SRTV’s Board of Directors is made up of 13 members, appointed by a vote of Parliament. Of these, 11 are chosen from the candidates proposed by Parliament, the President of Romania and the Government, and two are chosen from the candidates proposed by SRTV staff.

The president of the board of directors is appointed by the parliament from among the full members of the board. The president of TVR is at the same time the CEO.

Doinea Gradea has been the president-general director of TVR since 2017, in full government of the PSD. He receives 28,500 gross lei, plus a 25% increase in seniority. This means that the total amount is almost 1,000 euros higher than that of the President of Romania.

The members of the Board of Directors of the Romanian Television Company have repeatedly demanded the removal of Doina Gradea from the position of president-CEO of TVR. However, she refused, supported by other members.

Therefore, if she does not want to resign, only Parliament can remove her from office.

The Standing Committees on Culture, meeting, of the two Chambers may propose, with the vote of the majority of the members of the Plenary of Parliament, the removal of any member of the Board of Directors whose activity is inappropriate.

Parliament decides by majority vote.
