Turkey is in one of the most active seismic zones in the world. In 1999, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the northwest of the country, killing more than 17,000 people, including 1,000 in Istanbul.

In 2011, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Van province (east), killing more than 600 people.

The first reports in Greece do not indicate victims, according to the media citing local authorities. Greece is located on important geological faults and earthquakes are very common, especially at sea, most without victims.
