We will be together and say that together we have won and that whatever we have to face later, we will continue to win together! ”Said the head of state, in the speech held in the Plaza del Arco de Triunfo.

The ceremony ended shortly before 11:30, after President Klaus Iohannis’ speech.

After the singing of the national anthem, President Iohannis laid a wreath in memory of the Romanian heroes who fell on the battlefields for the reunification of the Romanian nation and the victims of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Klaus Iohannis:

  • Dear Romanians,
  • In this market, which has witnessed so many parties, today we are much less than usual.
  • The cadence of the military, the joy in the eyes of children, raised in the arms of excited parents or grandparents, are images that we miss and that we want to see again as soon as possible.
  • In this context in which we find ourselves now, look like in previous years of the Arc de Triomphe, this symbol of sacrifice and hope of the Romanian nation, I wish Romanians happy birthday, wherever they are, health and optimism!
  • Never in the last decades have I received December 1 with such concern and anguish.
  • The health crisis that changed the life of the planet, the COVID-19 pandemic that affected us, forces us to mark the National Day in other registers than the usual ones.
  • As in so many decisive moments in our turbulent history, every day men and women, full of courage and courage, fight the pandemic and, by saving other Romanians, in fact, they carry forward the ideals of unity and unity, in spirit. and action, which were fulfilled in that incomparable 1918.
  • Since the beginning of the pandemic, we are physically distant from each other, we see each other less often and we feel the absence of interaction with our loved ones, and the borders seem to separate us again.
  • And yet, nothing can keep us, in spirit, from commemorating the great achievement of more than 100 years ago, nothing can prevent us from remembering, today, all those who, with faith, vision, self-denial and sacrifice, contributed to the perfection of the State. modern Romanian.
  • Ladies and gentlemen,
  • The history of Romania, like that of Europe to which we belong, does not resemble a triumphal march and has never been a brilliant succession of happy events.
  • On the contrary, our history has been marked by many crises and difficult stages, which have often threatened even people’s lives, people’s freedom, the identity of communities and the existence of the State.
  • Our grandparents and parents went through wars, faced natural disasters, suffered famines, experienced periods of severe social tension, and were victims of the darkest political regimes.
  • His determination, courage, capacity for sacrifice, will to live in freedom and peace made it possible to overcome all these hardships, despite the almost unimaginable challenges.
  • The Revolution of 1848, the Union of Romanian Principalities, the War of Independence, the Great Union of 1918, the Romanian Revolution of December 1989, integration into NATO and accession to the European Union are the milestones of Romania. democratic today.
  • None of these achievements came naturally, and the generations that made them always believed, with full conviction, that the Romania they dreamed of is an achievable project with work, solidarity and sacrifice.
  • 102 years ago, in Alba Iulia, it was decided to unite Transylvania with Romania. Who would have imagined that this moment of glory would come right after a terrible war, which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, and after our country was almost wiped off the map? And yet it happened. The Arc de Triomphe, next to which we now stand, tells us that victory comes when ideals are high and diligently pursued, it testifies that heroes have fallen in the duty that all citizens of this country know a Path of the current, contemporary Victory, a future of security, achievement and prosperity.
  • We are obliged to preserve, as most precious assets, freedom, unity and independence, won at the cost of life by so many generations of pioneers, and to duly honor the heroes who restored pride and honor to the Romanian nation.
  • Dear Romanians,
  • The patriotic heroes we speak of today have worthy descendants. I want to tell you about them and I want to dedicate this day to them.
  • This year, in which Romanians had to endure the consequences of the pandemic and restrictive measures designed to lessen its effects, when we all had to give up a normal life to protect our health, many brave Romanians found themselves on the front lines, fighting against virus and disease, for the life and health of our fellow men.
  • Everyone’s effort has been and is enormous, the deprivations and the way our lives have changed have affected us all, but the excruciating pain caused by the death of our loved ones cannot be relieved with anything.
  • Our thoughts go out to this year’s heroes, the medical staff and all those who sacrifice to stop the spread of the virus, but also the victims of this deadly virus and their families.
  • I convey, on behalf of the Romanian State, all the appreciation, respect and gratitude towards those who wear the medical and military uniform.
  • I express my full gratitude to all Romanians who support the efforts of medical personnel and law enforcement and public security.
  • And, on behalf of all Romanians, thank you for your altruism and because, despite the enormous risks to which you are exposed, you leave home every day to go to hospitals to save lives.
  • We know and feel the colossal effort made since March by the medical staff and we will always remember the harsh tribute paid by doctors, nurses, nurses and ambulances. We will always honor those to whom we owe our lives to those around us.
  • At the same time, I congratulate civil society, which throughout this period has been a partner in the fight against the pandemic, through exemplary mobilization and the prompt response offered in many desperate situations.
  • Every era has its culmination! Every generation has its heroes! I am convinced that, in the future, those who are children today will remember this national effort, as we recall today those who made the Union or took to the streets in December 1989.
  • Over the years, we can be proud of the way the Romanians responded to this challenge.
  • Future generations will remember his humanity, his courage, his immense sacrifices. And what will earn you respect will not only be your noble contribution to the humanitarian cause, but also our common values and ideals and the fact that we are willing to fight for them, as our ancestors did more than once. century.
  • Dear Romanians,
  • Today, as in the important moments that we honor on National Day, the participation of each one of us is necessary. Our goal must be to support efforts to overcome this challenging period and to commit ourselves to a new commitment to the future.
  • It will not be easy, but I am sure that together, with energy and responsibility, we will be able to get closer, every day, to the return to normality.
  • All over Romania, I have seen overwhelming stories about people helping others, about people volunteering, about people continually donating to hospitals in distress. This is the union of Romanians in 2020!
  • Our way forward will not be easy. Together and in solidarity with its European partners, Romania sees in this period of crisis the moment to restart its energies for growth and prosperity, balance and peace. Now is the time to formulate responsible and realistic strategies, to repair where the damage runs deep, to develop ambitious and long-term projects where we have been suffering for decades.
  • In a few days, Romanians will have the opportunity to make their voices heard again, voting, and electing a new Parliament.
  • It is that moment in which we can build a Romania whose future is more than a promise, more concrete than a dream and closer than the horizon of our hopes. A Parliament with honest, hard-working and better people.
  • I find very appropriate the words of Iuliu Maniu, one of the Union’s artisans, who said that “full freedom and the equal division in the state power of citizens is the only solid basis for the development of a state.”
  • It depends on the actions of each one of us that the young generations live in peace, prosperity and stability.
  • Remembering the supreme sacrifice of our ancestors and honoring their memory, we must not fear the future. We build the future together! Just as the Romanian nation has overcome so many difficult moments, I am sure that this time we will make it!
  • United, in solidarity and determined, we will come out of this difficult period well. And when this pandemic is overcome, we will meet again. We will stand together and say that united we have won and that whatever we have to face later, we will continue to win together!
  • Happy birthday Romania!
  • Happy birthday, dear Romanians!
  • I wish you good health!
