UEFA considers that Sebastian Colțescu’s attitude is not racist when he used the word “black”, referring to a team official Istanbul Başakşehir. The decision comes two months after the match between Paris Saint-Germain and the Turkish team, a match refereed by a Romanian delegation. The game was interrupted in the 16th minute, with the score 0-0, due to words considered racist by the Başakşehir staff, writes Sport.es.
On 8 December, to identify a member of the Istanbul Başakşehir team, substitute referee Sebastian Colțescu sent “the black over there” to the center of Ha “egan through the receiver, referring to second coach Pierre Webó.
The conversation was overheard by representatives of the Turkish national team, who caused a real scandal. After these accusations, the players of both teams left the field and went to the locker room, refusing to play. The match was suspended and resumed the next day.
The expression has no negative connotations
On 9 December, UEFA announced the opening of an investigation against substitute referee Sebastián Colțescu, for a possible “racist” attitude after the use of the word “black” in his conversation with the main referee. Sport.es announced on Thursday that the investigation ended after both parties were heard.
According to the newspaper SPORT, UEFA considers that the attitude of the Romanian referee cannot be considered “racist”. The use of this word was made with the intention of helping the head referee identify the person from the Turkish team squad in the conversation through the headset.
It was simply inappropriate behavior, which the Romanian referee could have prevented
However, the European football forum assures that it was inappropriate conduct, which the Romanian referee could have prevented.
“This interpretation implies that the sanctions provided for in article 14 of the UEFA disciplinary rules on racism or other discriminatory conduct will not apply to Sebastian Coletescu, but establishes a minimum suspension of 10 games or for a specific period of time.
Now, Colțescu can bear the sanctions provided for in article 11, which speaks of misconduct.
