Turkmenistan President Gurbanguli Berdimuhametov said on Saturday that licorice could serve as a cure for the coronavirus, a supposedly miraculous new recipe promoted by the isolated and authoritarian central Asian country, AFP said on Saturday, according to Agerpres.
“Scientists from all countries are currently looking for effective remedies against coronavirus, conducting numerous studies, and one of them (remedies – no) could be licorice root,” Berdimuhametov told a ministerial meeting.

The Turkmen president insisted that “licorice prevents the development of the coronavirus” and that “even a low concentration of a liquid liquorice extract has neutralizing effects,” but did not provide any scientific evidence to support his claims.
Berdimuhametov noted that Turkmenistan has “sufficient reserves” of licorice and commissioned the Academy of National Sciences to study the supposed beneficial effects of this herb, which is also present in Europe.
