San Andrés is a festival marked with a red cross on the calendar and is full of symbolism, traditions and customs. On Saint Andrew’s Day, to be free from diseases and the bad thoughts of others, all Orthodox Christians can say the following prayer:
Prayer of Saint Andrew
“O Lord our God, you who have spoken and made the creature, do not separate your divinity from us sinners, lest the terrible and frightful wrath of pains, which is the fruit of our sins, come upon us, that all day long We recklessly commit them countless.
We are sinful and passionate, unworthy and full of evil, and You are the source of life and mercy; don’t leave us, Lord; Do not overlook our sinners prayer, nor reward us for our iniquities, but, because we are not worthy to earn your mercy with your daily diligence, grant it to us, O Lord, as a merciful one.
Through the prayers of your Apostle Andrew, grant us new health and a life free from all evil. To his remembrance, today strengthen us with your ruling gift, so that from the depths of our hearts, we can joyfully praise your celebration and glorify your most holy name, forever and ever. Amen”.
Traditions and customs of San Andrés
Do not leave hairpins or stitches. It is said that on the night of San Andrés the dead and the living undead multiply in the streets and take the stakes and forks to start the battle for supremacy. That is why households hide tools for field work in the barn.
Do not weave or spin wool. Women cannot use a needle and thread on Saint Andrew’s Day because the Mother of God will punish them. It is a holy day in which we must pray and rest.
Combing is not allowed. You are not even allowed to comb your hair on this vacation. It is said that if you comb your hair and some strands fall out, as many strands as there are on the teeth of the comb means the amount of bad luck that will feed you next year.
You are not allowed to work. You are not allowed to work that day. You have to rest because, as tradition says, job seekers can get sick, they can face a number of problems.
Don’t talk dirty. People who talk dirty on this day or get angry at God run the risk of choking, getting dizzy, or burning their tongues from the soup.
