The director of the Marius Nasta Institute, Beatrice Mahler, notes that antigen testing has become a phenomenon in Romania. Thus, people who know they are sick are given an antigen test and no longer go to the hospital for confirmation, which influences the reality of community transmission of the virus.
When asked if the number of confirmed cases is expected to increase in January, Beatrice Mahler replied: “If people want to get the PCR test, yes, if they only keep the antigen test, which has become almost a phenomenon, people know they are sick, they do the antigen test, but they do not return to the hospital for confirmation. We probably don’t have this mirror of the reality of community transmission statistically“.
The “Marius Nasta” hospital is 100% busy, Mahler said: “We do not feel a relaxation at the level of the Nasta Institute.”
The doctor stated that a new wave of infections is expected to follow in Romania as well, so vaccination is urgently needed.
“If we look at what is happening in European countries, and in us the probability is high that this third wave reaches“, According to the doctor.
Regarding the new strain that manifests itself in Europe, but has also crossed the ocean, Mahler specified that the vaccine also covers this variant of the virus.
“We don’t know what will happen in the future. It would be very good, with this opportunity to vaccinate and reduce community transmission, to be able to benefit from the offer that we have related to prophylactic treatment and to reach a time when community transmission is no longer so high. Mahler pointed out.
Today begins the vaccination of “Marius Nasta”. Half of the Institute’s employees, that is, around 350 people, will be vaccinated against Covid. Vaccination begins with an older doctor, then a student who has volunteered on the institute’s team for a month, and a nurse who has become infected and has lung disease. Manager Beatrice Mahler will also be vaccinated.
