On Friday, Nice police and customs officials confiscated and destroyed a total of 1.2 tons of food, cooked food and drinks received by Romanians from their hometown for the holidays.

Three trucks and a van from Moldova and Romania were intercepted by the 20 municipal police, customs agents and the environment department. The vehicles were full of cargo. About 500 illegal packages were unloaded from the cars, containing 234 packages of smuggled cigarettes, nearly 250 liters of alcohol, vacuum cleaners, chairs and 1.2 tons of food, writes News.ro.

Cigarettes and alcohol were seized and food was destroyed because the transport of meat, fish, cheese and cooked food took several days without observing hygiene and temperature. The seats and vacuum cleaners were returned.

The vehicles have been impounded for the time being and will be returned to the owners after fines for illegal transportation and undercover work are paid. This transport of goods was not declared in France, and the eight people who were in the trucks could not present employment contracts, declarations of posted workers, adds France Bleu.

The operation was organized after the Nice municipal police warned a few months ago that a clandestine market had reappeared in the Russian church district. In that market they were brought with trucks from Eastern Europe produced of all kinds, pre-ordered by phone or online.

“Since I came to direct the municipal police, in 2017, we have organized actions to combat this type of commerce, which is also a disturbance of public order, because it was carried out on the street. These trucks from the eastern countries had stopped arriving, but for a few months I noticed that they were coming back, so we decided to act, ”said Nice Municipal Police Chief Richard Gianotti.
