In just two months, 72 children from a commune on the border of Iași and Vaslui counties were transferred to the state.
It’s another effect of how the pandemic feels among adults, who become much more aggressive, especially with children, psychologists say.
In Iasi, needy families handed over ten children. Two babies born prematurely, abandoned, will arrive these days at the Bistrita centers.
A Iași County woman gave birth to eight children. Only one was left in her care.
Woman: “May he at least have happiness, may he have everything he needs.”
The family is imprisoned in endless poverty. Due to the beatings received by the alcoholic father, the other seven minors, between 4 and 17 years old, were taken away by the State.
Woman: “The husband always jumped to the beat, how do you raise them alone? If you only came drunk, where did the money come from? I had to go to work during the day. “
Reporter: “Is there a better life there than at home?”
Woman: “But of course it’s a better life, everyone has food there, they have everything they need. There are no more fugitives, no more beatings.”
With the start of the coronavirus epidemic in Romania, minors have become more exposed to violence, abuse and neglect, according to data from the Child Protection Directorates.
Liliana Luca, a psychologist at the Institute of Socola Psychiatry in Iași: “It was clear that the effects of the pandemic will be felt, as adults, when they have feelings of insecurity about the future, they reflect the aggression inherent in children.”
Just take a look at the official reports to understand the magnitude of the sad phenomenon. In the first six months of the year, 166 minors were abandoned in Iași County alone. 16% more than in the same period of 2019. As difficult as it may seem to believe, there are cases in which the state has taken care of ten children from the same family.
From the commune of Belcești, according to the County’s Child Protection Directorate, 72 minors arrived at the centers in just two months. The number of abuses has also doubled.
Tiberiu Bantaș, DGASPC Iași spokesperson: “Regarding abuse of any kind, sexual, emotional, negligence, in 2019 there were 177 cases, this year it has doubled, we have more than 308. Covid affected the income of those in the country, who worked as day laborers and so many children arrived in the system “
In Bistrița Năsăud, where 45 minors were under state guardianship last year, there are 41 children abandoned in the first part of 2020 alone.
Flaviu Bercea Head of DGASPC Bistrița Năsăud Service: “We have children that we took from the hospital, that is, abandoned by their parents in the hospital, but also children who had no one to supervise them at home, the parents went abroad.
In a few days, three other minors from Bistrita will arrive at the centers, of which two are premature.
