Thousands of smuggled cigarette packs, hidden in ceramic garden ornaments, were discovered by border police in Botosani. The value of smuggled cigarettes exceeds 40,000 lei.
The action took place on Tuesday when border police officers from the Botoșani Border Police Territorial Service, in cooperation with the Botoșani Immigration Office, carried out an action to combat illegal migration.
Around 21.55, two Mercedes Sprinter vans, registered in Romania, were arrested near the town of Joldești, Botoșani county, in which there were five people, Romanian citizens between 37 and 51 years old. During the controls, people were agitated, so they were transferred to the headquarters of the Border Police, along with the two means of transport. “After the detailed control carried out on the trucks, several ceramic statuettes for the garden were observed, attracting attention that they emanated a strong smell of freshly applied paint, and fresh traces of plaster were observed at their base. After removing the plaster base, several cigarette packs were discovered inside the statuettes. “, according to a statement from the Border Police.
„The inventory of the merchandise resulted in the amount of 4,115 packets of cigarettes (82,300 cigarettes), for an amount of 40,730 lei, an amount that was collected, in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code, to continue the investigations. Likewise, the two means of transport used in the criminal activity, for an approximate value of 39,200 lei, were disabled to continue with the investigations.“Said the Botoșani border police.
