Experts working on the rehabilitation of the Casino in Constanza made a sensational discovery in the basement of the building, where they found riveted metal beams identical to those used in the construction of the Anghel Saligny Bridge in Cernavoda.

Both the Constance Casino (built between 1904 and 1910) and the Anghel Saligny Bridge (built between 1890 and 1895) were built on the initiative of King Carol I, and both became emblematic monuments of Romania.

In fact, the bridge in Cernavoda was called King Carol I, but the communist regime renamed it in honor of Anghel Saligny, the engineer who built it.

The renovation work on the casino, which started in January 2020, has already led to large-scale surprises for experts.

At this point, the works have been moved to the basement, where work is being done on the new configuration. Here metal beams identical to those used by Anghel Saligny in the construction of the bridge from Cernavoda were discovered in the structure of the building.

“We are working in the basement. Remove the load-bearing walls to create the new configuration. In the basement there is something interesting to note: there are metal beams attached with rivets, as in the Cernavoda Bridge, made by Saligny. The beams of Riveted and painted gray metal are almost identical to those used by the engineer Anghel Saligny on the Cernavoda Bridge, ”said architect Radu Cornescu for Replica de Constanza.

The discovery comes just days after experts uncovered sketches and documents hidden within the casino’s walls, likely there by detainees who worked on the building’s renovation in the 1950s.

And the architect Radu Cornescu, who supervises the works, was convinced that we will have more surprises.

“We will surely have more surprises!”

“We will surely have other surprises. The remodeling of the interior spaces will be carried out to make this building work more in the cultural aspect. Inside the Casino there will be a permanent exhibition with the history of this building. There is no easy part in restoring This monument. After working on the resistance and the architecture, murals will be made and old furniture will be brought in, created from the models of 100 years ago, “the architect also stated.

Konstanz Casino, one of the most important historical monuments in Romania, was repaired in January, after being abandoned for 20 years.

The works, which the builder promises to complete in 30 months, will cost 12 million euros.
