Salaries are increasing as of January 1. The government has concluded negotiations with employers and unions. What about fines on the road?

Florin Jianu, president of the National Council of SMEs of Romania (CNIPMMR), announced this morning the increase of the minimum wage by 3% and the freezing of the fine point for 2021 at 145 lei.

“The National Tripartite Council has just ended. We discussed with the Government of Romania the following aspects:

1. Increase the minimum wage by 3%, as proposed by CNIPMMR, that is, from 2230 to 2300 lei.

2. The fine point will also freeze by 2021 at 145 lei, ”Jianu reported on his social media page.

About two weeks ago, Florin Jianu said that the three minimum wage increase scenarios proposed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection are based on uncertain indicators.

“The 3 scenarios presented by the Ministry of Labor have a series of indicators that are predicted, and these indicators are uncertain, because in the way they were forecast, we should have lowered the minimum wage in the economy even in 2020, because there was a difference between the forecast economic growth and the achieved economic growth, and now we have a deep economic decline, of -4%, compared to to what he had predicted earlier in the year, from +4.

So this economic decline should have led to a decrease in the minimum wage in the economy in 2020, strictly on the criteria used by the Ministry of Labor. Of course, we really shouldn’t have done such a thing and it never will be. I tell you this because these indicators are uncertain, we don’t have to put them in a formula to increase or decrease the gross minimum wage, ”he said.

The unions had demanded 2,400 lei

Subsequently, on December 20, NBS leader Dumitru Costin declared that the unions had proposed an increase in the minimum wage to 2,400 gross lei as of January 1.

“I remind you that I had a meeting of the CNT, I remind you that the Ministry of Labor has been working for about two and a half months in a technical working group in the Ministry of Labor with the minimum wage mechanism. In that CNT we communicated our point of view, all the union part, 2400 lei gross as of January 1, the employer part was divided into three – the area of SMEs proposed an increase from January 1 to 2300 lei, the rest of employers’ organizations leaned in and said they propose a moratorium of between three and six months, let’s see what happens next and discuss in three months or six months. The government did not specify anything in this regard ”, transmitted the NBS leader.

On the other hand, in the absence of a clear agreement, as of January 1 there is a risk of increasing the fine point by 100 lei, from 145 lei as it is still today, to 223 lei – 10% of the gross minimum wage in the economy. .

Thus, as of January 1, there is a risk that, for a person driving a car after consuming alcohol, the fine will increase from 2,900 lei to 4,430 lei. This increase would have been possible even if the gross minimum wage in the economy had not increased since January 1, since the government had not yet issued a decision to extend the period until which the fine was capped at 145 lei.
