Brexit brings new rules for Romanian drivers. Right-hand drive cars brought from Great Britain will NO longer be homologated in Romania. The UK is no longer part of the European Union and therefore the certificate issued there is no longer valid. Cars bought from the British will only receive a certificate if the steering wheel is moved to the left. However, this entails high costs, which can reach up to several thousand euros.
Drivers who have already registered cars brought in from the UK will not have to repeat the procedure. However, if they make significant changes to the vehicle’s identity card, they will need to change the driving position to the left for the car to be approved.
How much does it cost to move the steering wheel to the left?
Many drivers prefer cars in the UK because of the lower price. However, the economy for such an acquisition may be lost with the new conditions that must be met. Changing the driving position can cost between 500 and several thousand euros, depending on the car model.
There is practically nothing left in place. The operation may even involve removing the motor, so that there is enough space, the windshield wipers are completely changed, they rotate in the opposite direction, the entire area called “fire wall” is permanently changed.
All the changes provide extra safety through the driver’s position located on the left side, but an extra risk due to the fact that these changes can be made incorrectly. To change the brake pipes, NOT extended, modified, made like sanitary installations, it is important that the steering box is correctly placed, in its place ”, shows Emil Gâtej, driving instructor.
What happens to the right-hand drive cars brought from Cyprus and Malta?
So far, 120,000 right-hand drive cars have been registered in Romania.. Annually, between 150 and 200 drivers who drive these vehicles suffer traffic accidents.
“The worst thing is to overtake, because you cannot see from the right what is coming from the left. These are good in England, but in our country it would be good to drive as they drive,” says a driver.
“The worst situation is when we have a truck in front of us, with a semi-trailer, with a matte rear, we don’t see anything fucking and then you can’t get out if its speed is reduced for various reasons – it’s very difficult, the trend is you want escaping, getting out of there, you have the feeling of having a car, but the biggest problem is that you can’t see! ”explains driving instructor Emil Gâtej.
Drivers who own a UK car and have failed to register it in Romania have at their disposal 90 days to become legal.
Cars brought from Malta or Cyprus, where they also circulate on the left side, can still be homologated in Romania, without being modified, because these two countries are part of the European Union.
