About 100 people protested in front of the Ministry of Labor, unhappy with the expected increase in the minimum wage in the economy. The protesters complained that the increase of just 41 net lei is not enough and does not match the prices that have risen recently. The Minister of Labor, Raluca Turcan, proposed to the trade unionists present in front of the institution that from next year they find together a solution of increases. However, trade unionists are considering further protests.

Protester: “Come and talk to people who are in the subsistence stage (sic). Come and explain to people how they can live on 1,300 lei ”.

Trade unionists are unhappy that the minimum wage has increased by just 41 lei. They say that they spoke to the representatives of the Ministry of Labor and asked for an increase of 100 lei. But this did not happen, so they chose to protest.

Protester: “We are talking about the minimum wage, which is below any criticism at this level, even 2,400 is very little. You cannot live on this minimum wage. I believe that the minimum wage should cover a daily basket ”.

Protester: “100-150 lei more, not 40 lei, in my opinion. But anyway, 100-150 is very little at today’s prices, which have increased day by day.”

For two hours people shouted their discontent, until the current Minister of Labor, Raluca Turcan, invited them to a discussion.

“I explained again the reasons why I reached this increase in the minimum wage of 3.1%, in gross value of 70 lei, given that there were two extreme proposals: freeze the minimum wage and have a moratorium in which no increase will be made of the minimum wage and the unions’ proposal to have an increase of more than 7%, unsustainable ”, declared Raluca Turcan for Digi24.

However, the trade unionists were not satisfied.

Vasile Gogescu, Federation of Free Trade Unions: “He proposed the option of a 6-month moratorium in which we refrain from protesting and they, together with us, work on the option of increasing the minimum wage.”

Anton Hadăr, Vice President of Cartel Alfa: “The Romanian government should allocate an additional 100 lei per month from the country’s funds for the 1,300,000 employees and thus support the increase in the minimum wage. An elementary arithmetic calculation shows us that 1,300,000 multiplied by 12 months multiplied by 100 lei gives 1,560,000,000. Anyway, Romania borrowed more than 100 billion lei, wouldn’t we find 1.5 billion to keep it and go a little higher and earn 100 lei compared to 41? ”.

Vasile Gogescu: “People can no longer live here on honest work wages and then leave. It doesn’t go away forever. “

In Romania there are more than 1.3 million salaried employees with the minimum wage in the economy. Starting January 1, 2021, they will receive an additional salary of 41 lei.
