A police leader has decided to suspend the electoral campaign.
Ilan Laufer, candidate for the post of Mayor General of the Capital, but also as president of the National Identity Force Party – PSL, filed a complaint with the Ombudsman’s Office with no. of registration 16085 / September 4, 2020, which indicates, in this way, a serious violation of the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the following articles of the Romanian Constitution.
He wants the postponement of the local elections.
“As a candidate for the post of Mayor General of the Capital, but also as president of the National Identity Force Party – PSL, today I filed a complaint with the Ombudsman’s Office with no. of registry 16085 / September 4, 2020, which indicates, in this way, a serious violation of the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the following articles of the Romanian Constitution:
art. 36 on the right to vote, art. 37 on the right to be elected, art. 30 on freedom of expression, art. 25 on the right to free movement.
On the other hand, the very regulation by law of a concept never before seen in Romanian legislation, namely the alert concept, seriously and blatantly contradicts the fundamental law of the state, since article 93 of the Constitution clearly establishes that only the state of emergency or siege may restrict the exercise of certain rights or freedoms, by reference to article 53 of the Constitution. In this situation, neither the electoral campaign nor the elections can be held, according to the law.
After the first week of the electoral campaign, in which every day we have a record of new cases of infections, fewer and fewer places in ATI, and the number of deaths increases alarmingly from one week to the next, we find that legislative changes to the electoral law on local elections, transform this electoral campaign:
In a catalyst for the spread of the COVID-19 virus, putting people’s lives in real danger.
In a purely formal exercise, unable to really ensure that the political programs, doctrines and strategies of the parties and candidates involved in the elections are made known to the public, so that citizens can exercise their right to vote consciously.
At the same time, we, the candidates, are forced to campaign on the streets, in the apartment blocks, from house to house, increasing the risk of transmitting COVID-19 and putting our lives, our children, parents, grandparents at risk. . as well as the citizens with whom we come in contact and for whom we ask to vote.
Therefore, not wanting to endanger the lives of family members, colleagues and citizens, I decided to suspend my campaign and thus ask for the postponement of the elections until we get out of this disguised state of emergency, and the conditions allow compliance with the Constitution and the fundamental rights that it guarantees.
