“If it were only up to the Turkish president, his navy would have sunk a Greek ship in the Mediterranean a long time ago,” the army said according to G4media.
Die Welt points out that the Turkish leader’s move against Greece is indeed much more complex than he suggests.
“The truth is that Turkish President Erdogan is not only interested in natural gas in the sea. His nationalist rhetoric follows a completely different calculation,” says the publication under the title “Erdogan’s calculated war.”
According to the sources cited, Erdogan’s desire to open a confrontation with Greece is so great that he would have asked some generals to sink a Greek ship, taking care that no one was injured. The generals present in the discussion refused, the publication also reports, and someone else from Erdogan’s team would have proposed the option of shooting down a Greek fighter plane, with the pilot having the possibility of using the catapult platform to save himself. The Turkish generals also rejected this proposal.
The issue presented by Die Welt adds to the multitude of threats launched in recent days by Recep Tayyip Erdogan against Greece.
The Turkish leader has strongly expressed his position on opening a war against Greece, should its maritime territory be violated. More recently, Erdogan accuses Greece of piracy and criticizes Athens’ attempt to militarize the islands off the Turkish coast.
