Large-scale scandal in Portugal after 16 Spanish hunters killed 540 wild boars and deer in a private hunt, the BBC reports.
The hunt took place during a private event 40 kilometers from Lisbon, in Azambuja, on December 17 and 18. The farm is fenced so that the animals have no escape.
The hunters were allegedly the ones who posted photos and videos of the hunt, exposing the dead animals as trophies. After the images were made public, hundreds of outraged reactions emerged.
The images have provoked the outrage not only from the public, but also from environmental associations, authorities and even Portuguese hunters.
Portuguese Environment Minister João Fernández said that the hunt for the 16 Spaniards was “a vile and unacceptable act.” He also filed a lawsuit against him and suspended the hunting license of the farm where the massacre occurred.
The Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, which oversees hunting in Portugal, has already reported that it had no prior information that the hunting would take place.
