More than 4,500 trucks stranded in the English port of Dover for several days crossed the English Channel on Friday after additional troops were dispatched to speed up coronavirus testing, British Transport Minister Grant Shapps said, according to Reuters. Agerpres.

Ferry services between Dover and the French port of Calais resumed on Thursday, ending a blockade imposed by France for several days following the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus in England.

British Transport Minister Grant Shapps wrote on Twitter on Friday that more than 10,000 coronavirus tests had been carried out among truck drivers and that only 24 of them tested positive.

More than 4,500 heavy vehicles have re-crossed the English Channel, “Shapps said.

Britain has sent additional troops to help clear the queues of trucks whose drivers were waiting for evidence against COVID-19 before they were allowed to board the ferries to cross the Channel. According to the British media, an additional 800 soldiers were sent to support the 300 already deployed there.

The military reviewed the documents of trucks and drivers at the entrance of the port.

The French and British governments agreed on Tuesday to end the lockdown, but British authorities said it would take several days to release the long lines.
