During the holidays, the demand for books by authors such as Mihai Bendeac, Andrei Ciobanu or Marian Godină increased in bookstores, to the detriment of authors of classical literature. The writer Daniel Cristea Enache explained, for DC NEWS, what are the reasons for this phenomenon.
It is not a trend only in Romania, it is a European and global trend. When we return to normalcy and go to other countries, we will see that in airports and in areas where books are sold we will see that the so-called bestsellers are on the first shelf. These are paraliterature books, not literature itself.
The books that are increasingly requested in Romania, such as those written by Mihai Bendeac, Andrei Ciobanu, Marian Godină, fall into the same field, paraliterature. They are precarious fiction books, written by authors who have other merits than being a writer. They are celebrities, influencers, actors, singers, everything but professional writers.
This consumer literature is more attractive, more accessible than the literature itself, which often has passages of great difficulty and illegibility. Between an author of the above and a book by Joyce or a book of poems by Ion Barbu, it is obvious that they are easier to read, and that is why these types of books are bought more.
But we don’t have to worry. Quality literature, even if it is not sold in the first instance, is a winner in the medium and long term. “Daniel-Cristea Enache explained for DC NEWS.
